Recent and Upcoming Events

Back in August, I had the opportunity to sit down with Nigel Beale and discuss one of my personal and academic interests–Canadian book design. We spoke about Frank Newfeld, McClelland & Stewart, Coach House, and a bunch of other stuff. If you’re interested, you can listen to the 38 minute interview at Nigel’s always fascinatingContinue reading “Recent and Upcoming Events”

Ottawa Small Press Book Fair (October 2013)

Some very preliminary notes on a few of the items I brought home from the recent small press book fair. I haven’t had much time to devote to reading through all of this yet, but I wanted to post some initial thoughts and responses while the fair was fresh in my mind. So: —. GrowContinue reading “Ottawa Small Press Book Fair (October 2013)”

Ottawa Small Press Book Fair Roundup (June 2013)

Back from the book fair with far too much to discuss in the detail any of it deserves. Below are some notes on a few standout items I picked up. At the pre-fair reading on Friday, I got my hands on an envelope from jwcurry’s 1cent/Room 3o2. I subscribed several months ago when jwcurry revealedContinue reading “Ottawa Small Press Book Fair Roundup (June 2013)”

In/Words: the longpoem envelope (2008)

2013 has seen a run of short memoirs by former In/Words editors, most of them to do with the few years that I was lucky enough to be involved (2006-2009, approximately). A profile by rob mclennan at Open Book: Ontario in February seems to have been what sparked the nostalgic wave, followed up with piecesContinue reading “In/Words: the longpoem envelope (2008)”

Peter Gibbon, William Hawkins

On heels of rob mclennan’s profile of In/Words two weeks ago, poet, editor and friend Peter Gibbon has written a short memoir on his time with the magazine as well and published it on his Conduit Canada blog. Pete has a pile of smart and insightful things to say about the mag, and some hilariousContinue reading “Peter Gibbon, William Hawkins”

rob mclennan on In/Words

From 2006-2009 (or thereabouts), I was an editor at In/Words Magazine & Chapbook Press at Carleton University. My first published poem was in In/Words (Volume 5, Issue 3, February 2006, on the same page as Ben Ladouceur). I worked editing for the magazine, editing chapbooks, and helping to make a monthly open-mic reading series happen.Continue reading “rob mclennan on In/Words”

The Hard Return by Marcus McCann

Hey, I’ve got three words in a book with a spine! I was at Octopus Books yesterday where I picked up Lisa Robertson’s new Bookthug title Nilling, as well as Marcus McCann‘s second trade collection, The Hard Return, published by Insomniac. Marcus lives in Toronto currently, but he was a longtime stalwart of Ottawa’s creativeContinue reading “The Hard Return by Marcus McCann”

Grey Matters: The Peace Arts Anthology (Ottawa: Peace Arts Publishers, 1985)

My formal literary education, as well as my small press/little mag educations, find their origins at Carleton University. I spent several years working with a little mag and chapbook press called In/Words run out of a small office on the 19th floor of Dunton Tower. At the time, it felt as though Carleton had veryContinue reading “Grey Matters: The Peace Arts Anthology (Ottawa: Peace Arts Publishers, 1985)”
